More than 90% of us read reviews before booking, often consulting six to ten sources before making a single decision. Before we ever arrive, our experience has already been filtered, ranked, and approved.

The same pattern extends far beyond travel. More than 80% of Netflix viewing is driven by recommendations, while over two-thirds of Spotify listening is driven by algorithmic playlists. GPS navigation has largely replaced wayfinding, making us less likely to wander beyond the route we’ve been given.

What We Remember

The result is undeniable. We make better decisions, avoid more disappointments, and move through the world with greater confidence. Increasingly, however, we’re no longer discovering the world for ourselves. We’re moving through experiences that have already been filtered and ranked.

This matters because experience is not only about what happens in the moment. It’s also about what stays with us.

Research shows that unexpected moments are far more likely to become lasting memories than the experiences we anticipated. Surprise captures our attention because it interrupts routine. Long after the details of a trip begin to fade, it’s often the unplanned moments we remember most fondly8.

Perhaps most importantly, linen looks better when it appears lived in. A slightly rumpled bed can communicate comfort and ease in a way perfectly pressed bedding never will.

Few environments showcase linen’s strengths more clearly than life at sea.

Humidity is an unavoidable part of the onboard experience and linen’s ability to absorb moisture while remaining dry to the touch makes it particularly well suited to marine environments. Bedding, lightweight coverlets, guest robes, and lounge textiles can all benefit from linen’s breathability and comfort.

Whether in a hotel suite, aboard a yacht, or in our own homes, linen reminds us that comfort is rarely created through perfection. More often, it is created through use, familiarity, and time.

We tend to think of luxury as comfort, privacy, and access. Less intuitive, luxury is also about something else entirely: discovery.

Luxury has historically been measured in tangible things: larger rooms, finer materials, more amenities, and increasingly personalized service.

Yet many travelers already have access to abundance.

What becomes scarce is attention.

Economist Herbert Simon famously observed that “a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.” This may be particularly relevant for today’s affluent travelers. Executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders are not compensated primarily for their time. They are compensated for judgment, creativity, prioritization, and decision-making. Their value is tied to the quality of their thinking.

For this audience, attention is more than a psychological resource. It is an economic one.

This raises an important question for hospitality.

What if the next frontier of luxury is not adding more, but asking less?

A confusing arrival sequence. An overwhelming number of choices. A room that requires explanation. Each creates friction and draws from a finite reserve of mental bandwidth.

By contrast, environments that are intuitive, coherent, and thoughtfully orchestrated require less effort. They reduce cognitive load and allow guests to direct their attention elsewhere—toward conversation, reflection, creativity, connection, or rest.

Luxury has long been in the business of saving time.

Increasingly, it may be in the business of preserving attention.

One of the most fundamental human experiences is being held.

A hug.

An embrace.

They bring a sense of ease—a feeling of being enclosed.

On a psychological level, environments can do the same thing.

Curved furniture, rounded corners, and softened edges appear throughout many of the world’s most welcoming spaces. While we may not consciously notice them, the body often does.

Research published in Psychological Science found that people consistently preferred curved forms over angular ones. Researchers proposed that sharp contours may signal caution, while curves are more readily associated with comfort and ease.

Perhaps this helps explain why curves appear so frequently in hospitality environments. Long before we evaluate a space consciously, the body is already responding.

And perhaps it explains something else.

Curvature gently draws us inward.

It says:

Slow down.

Stay awhile.

You belong here.

There’s a reason concrete continues to appear in some of the world’s calmest interiors. Not because it is trendy. And not because minimalism remains culturally popular.

Concrete, the texture, the color, the implication, changes the emotional rhythm of a room.

A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Buildings found that concrete environments were associated with cognitive functioning, emotional stability, and rational thinking. Perhaps this helps explain concrete’s enduring appeal: it creates the conditions for clarity.

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF MATTE GRAY

The color of concrete matters too.

Studies surrounding environmental perception consistently associate muted neutrals and earth-derived tones with calm, restraint, and stability. Warm matte grays in particular tend to feel grounding, while cooler glossy grays can quickly drift toward sterile or institutional.

Concrete works best when it feels softened by light, texture, and scale — when it behaves less like industrial finish and more like weathered stone or packed earth. The result feels grounded, restrained, and quietly permanent.

And what emerges from that restraint is often interpreted as luxury.

WHY IT WORKS

Concrete also feels familiar because it echoes materials humans have encountered for millennia: stone, earth, weathered textures, and mineral surfaces. Especially when imperfectly finished, it carries a visual language that feels grounded rather than manufactured.

The calming effect is not exclusive to concrete itself. What feels grounding is often the visual behavior associated with concrete: low reflectivity, tonal restraint, softened texture, and visual weight.

That is why materials like Roman clay, matte limestone, weathered oak, and chalky textiles can create many of the same emotional effects. The brain responds less to the label of a material and more to the sensory information it provides.

THE NEW LUXURY OF RESTRAINT

Some materials energize a room. Others steady it.

Concrete belongs to the second category.

Its visual weight, muted tone, and matte surface create a sense of grounding within a space. It doesn’t compete for attention or ask the eye to keep working. Instead, it reduces visual demand and gives the room a quieter rhythm.

That feeling matters more than ever in environments where people already arrive overstimulated and mentally tired — hotels, lounges, wellness spaces, and homes intended for recovery rather than display. The most memorable hospitality environments are designed not to stimulate the senses, but to calm them.

Increasingly, the spaces that feel most luxurious are the ones that return something to the nervous system.

The surfaces that ground us tend to share the same quiet behavior: they absorb more than they announce.

In a hotel lobby, a private terminal, or a superyacht salon, the absence of such an anchor forces guests to do the work they should never have to do — scanning, assessing, orienting themselves in a space that has not yet decided what it is. That cognitive overhead is missed opportunity.

The room feels expensive because every element has been edited — and editing requires the discipline to remove the unnecessary. That discipline is what separates a beautiful mood board from an in tune interior.
