Chartreuse, ivory, delicate pleating and touches of gold. You can’t help but imagine summer’s garden, sparkling champagne, freshness, and a spirit of warmth.

Like many of us, we think heavy textures, tweeds and deep color tones for fall and winter, and then bursts of bright florals and fresh hues for spring and summer. Dior, instead, turned the predictable on its head, bringing bright color, flowing silhouettes and florals into its fall 2026 collection.

That unexpected juxtaposition is a perfect example of the topic at hand, the Nature of Uniqueness.

While our study is of interior spaces, we can learn a lot from the runway and the fashion houses that own the narrative. The collection illustrates something science suggests: that we remember things that depart slightly from what we expect.

A 2026 study explored what researchers call “affective surprise,” essentially, the difference between what we expect to feel and what we actually experience. Researchers found that greater surprise strengthened aspects of memory surrounding the experience.

There is something interesting in that idea.

Just maybe, the most memorable things aren’t always completely unfamiliar. They are familiar enough to create an expectation, and then different enough to surprise us.

Because atmosphere isn’t created by decoration alone. It emerges from the signs that a room is alive, inhabited, curious, and capable of bringing people together.

There’s a fascinating duality to atmosphere—its essence is ethereal, light, and flows effortlessly through a space. Yet it carries so much weight. If it’s off by even a little, the energy of a room can sink into what feels like a black hole, leaving a seemingly beautiful space unused and uninspiring. Increasingly, the ability to create the right energy, the right atmosphere, can have a powerful impact on a company’s bottom line.

Retailers have long understood the value of creating atmosphere to keep customers in their stores. The longer a shopper lingers, the more likely they are to make a purchase. And often, the longer they stay, the more they spend.

Hotels subscribe to the same principle. The longer a guest lingers, the greater the opportunity to create something memorable. In an experience economy, memory is one of the most valuable offerings a brand can create.

THE SHIFT

Over the last several years, we’ve begun to see evidence of a broader shift. Bain & Company has tracked luxury spending moving from goods toward experiences, with travel, hospitality, and dining becoming increasingly important to how consumers experience luxury. It’s a subtle but meaningful change. Luxury is no longer defined solely by what we own, but increasingly by what we experience.

Hotel lobbies are becoming destinations rather than waiting rooms. Retail stores increasingly resemble homes, galleries, and cafés. Spaces are being designed not simply to move people through them, but to encourage them to stay.

Perhaps the clearest signal comes from heritage luxury itself. Fashion houses are no longer content designing products; they’re designing places. Hotels, cafés, restaurants, and private clubs have become natural extensions of the brand. A handbag may introduce someone to a brand, but atmosphere deepens the relationship. It allows people to step inside a brand’s world rather than simply own a piece of it.

Together, these shifts point to something larger. Atmosphere is becoming more than a creative aspiration—it’s becoming a business strategy.

ATMOSPHERE AT WORK

Hôtel Hana in Paris offers an interesting example. It doesn’t rely on iconic architecture or dramatic gestures to create its identity. Instead, its atmosphere emerges through proportion, restraint, layered materials, and carefully orchestrated moments of discovery. Nothing demands attention, yet everything contributes to the feeling of the space. The experience feels intentional rather than decorative. It invites guests to slow down—not because they’re told to, but because the environment quietly encourages it.

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge approaches atmosphere from another angle. Its expansive lobby offers us choices: places to gather, work, pause, or simply watch the city. Rather than moving people through the space as efficiently as possible, it encourages them to remain. Guests linger over coffee, settle into conversations, or simply watch the changing light over the East River. That decision has emotional value, but it also has commercial value for the hotel. Every additional moment spent in the space creates another opportunity—for connection, for memory, and ultimately, for business.

THE INVISIBLE ADVANTAGE

The two properties feel different, yet both accomplish the same thing. They create environments people don’t want to leave.

Perhaps that’s the real measure of atmosphere. Not whether a room is beautiful, but whether it changes our behavior.

Atmosphere may be invisible. Its impact is anything but.

Walk through a beautiful park and notice what happens. No matter your mood, you begin to breathe a little deeper. Your shoulders soften. Your arms have room to stretch. And somewhere along the way, clarity quietly follows.

A well-designed room can have that same effect.

Frank Lloyd Wright said it best: “Space is the breath of art.” The ability of a room to create visual interest while preserving room to breathe is an art form in itself.

Imagine designing the air in a room rather than leaving it to whatever is left after decorating. That intention—especially in luxury spaces—creates a sense of flow and ease. It welcomes guests before they ever take a seat or admire a single object.

Perhaps that’s why the most luxurious spaces rarely feel full. They feel free.

Designing for air doesn’t require a larger space. It begins by resisting the urge to fill every corner. Leave room to move comfortably. Let light travel across the room. Give furniture permission to stand on its own. Air isn’t empty space. It’s the material that allows everything else to breathe.

Close your eyes for a moment and think of a room you’ve experienced that you absolutely loved. Not because it was beautiful, but because you wanted to stay.

What do you remember?

Most of us begin with the visible details. The fireplace. The books. The generous windows or the comfortable chair tucked into the corner. But if you look a little deeper, those objects don’t fully explain why the room stayed with you.

Perhaps it felt calm. Or there was a sense of welcome. Maybe it invited you to settle in and lose yourself in a book, or linger in conversation long after you intended to leave. Whatever the feeling, the room seemed to possess a quality that was greater than any one attribute.

THAT QUALITY IS ATMOSPHERE

That feeling isn’t imagined. Research in environmental psychology has shown that we begin evaluating an environment almost immediately, processing cues like openness, enclosure, proportion, and complexity before consciously evaluating individual design elements. The Approach-Avoidance Model, developed by Mehrabian and Russell, suggests that environments naturally influence whether we want to remain and engage or withdraw and leave.

Long before we admire the architecture or notice the craftsmanship of a chair, we’ve already answered a much more important question.

Do I want to stay here?

These four protocols translate those ideas into practice—small reminders to slow down, remain open, and leave room for the unexpected.

Because the best discoveries are rarely the ones we were looking for.

Slowly but surely, we have spent the last decade optimizing how we move through the world.

More than 90% of us read reviews before booking, often consulting six to ten sources before making a single decision. Before we ever arrive, our experience has already been filtered, ranked, and approved.

The same pattern extends far beyond travel. More than 80% of Netflix viewing is driven by recommendations, while over two-thirds of Spotify listening is driven by algorithmic playlists. GPS navigation has largely replaced wayfinding, making us less likely to wander beyond the route we’ve been given.

WHAT WE REMEMBER

The result is undeniable. We make better decisions, avoid more disappointments, and move through the world with greater confidence. Increasingly, however, we’re no longer discovering the world for ourselves. We’re moving through experiences that have already been filtered and ranked.

This matters because experience is not only about what happens in the moment. It’s also about what stays with us.

Research shows that unexpected moments are far more likely to become lasting memories than the experiences we anticipated. Surprise captures our attention because it interrupts routine. Long after the details of a trip begin to fade, it’s often the unplanned moments we remember most fondly8.

Perhaps that’s why so many of our favorite travel stories begin with a sentence no one intended to write:

“We weren’t planning to...”

LEAVING ROOM TO WANDER

Think of the hidden courtyard at the end of an unmarked path. The chair beneath a tree that quietly invited you to pause. The restaurant you never researched, yet somehow remember more vividly than the one everyone recommended.

These moments aren’t memorable because they were perfect. They’re memorable because we discovered them ourselves.

We’ve become remarkably good at arriving exactly where we intended.

The opportunity now is making sure there’s still room to discover what we never intended to find.

Because perhaps the greatest luxury is still the one that can’t be planned.

Instead, they tell stories about a trip they almost didn’t take. A person they met by chance or a conversation that changed their thinking.

There’s something easy about emotionally intelligent spaces. You know the feeling. You walk inside, take a deep breath, and within seconds, your shoulders drop. Your breathing slows and you’re at peace. You feel clearer, calmer, and a little captivated.

Nothing dramatic has happened. No one greeted you and there were no grand gestures made.

The room simply knew how to receive you.

The first thing the room gives you is clarity. At the center is a fire — low, sculptural, impossible to miss. But it is not compelling simply because it’s beautiful. It draws you in because it has meaning.

We instinctively associate fire with warmth, calm, shelter, and gathering. It speaks to something older than design language — something the body understands before the mind catches up. This particular fireplace adds a further charge: its scale and sculptural presence feel unexpected, dramatic as it creates a focal point with emotional weight.

Many rooms have focal points. Few offer one that tells the guest, without a word: look here first. You are safe now. Stay awhile.

In a hotel lobby, a private terminal, or a superyacht salon, the absence of such an anchor forces guests to do the work they should never have to do — scanning, assessing, orienting themselves in a space that has not yet decided what it is. That cognitive overhead is missed opportunity.

THEN IT TELLS YOU HOW TO USE THE SPACE

Once the eye has somewhere to land, the room quietly tells the guest where to be. The seating at The Manner wraps the perimeter in long, continuous lines — generous, grounded, and unambiguous. There is no tension between what is beautiful and what is usable. A guest does not arrive to find themselves solving a puzzle of decorative furniture that cannot be touched.

They simply sit down.

This is the difference between a space designed to be photographed and one designed to be inhabited. For practitioners commissioning interiors in constrained, transient environments — where a guest may spend only minutes, clarity matters.

WHY IT FEELS LUXURIOUS

The most convincing luxury is achieved through restraint — and restraint is harder to specify than richness. Here, concrete feels calm rather than cold and brass appears in measured moments. Nothing competes and nothing begs for attention.

The room feels expensive because every element has been edited — and editing requires the discipline to remove the unnecessary. That discipline is what separates a beautiful mood board from an in tune interior.

THE HIDDEN GIFT: LESS MENTAL WORK

What the Manner does best is reduce cognitive load. A guest does not need to decode it. They do not need to decide where to sit, how the space works, or whether they are reading it correctly. They can simply arrive.

In hospitality and private travel settings, guests have spent considerable energy getting there. The environments that best welcome them are those that give some of that energy back — that lower the volume, reduce friction, and ask nothing of the person who has just walked in.

The room that lets you exhale is not an accident. It is the result of a hundred decisions made correctly.
